This website now "Rated R". Hey, it could happen...especially if Andy Burnham, the United Kingdom's minister of culture, has any say in the matter.
Like the current rating systems for movies, TV shows and video games, the website rating system would be an attempt to warn web surfers of potentially questionable content and to protect children from offensive material.
Burnham says the government will work with the Obama administration to draft "international rules for English language Web sites."
"The more we seek international solutions to this stuff — the UK and the US working together — the more that an international norm will set an industry norm," stated Burnham.
The ruling, of course, would raise questions about free speech on the web. Burnham says that such issues are not relevant.
"If you look back at the people who created the Internet they talked very deliberately about creating a space that governments couldn't reach," Burnham said in an interview with The Telegraph. "I think we are having to revisit that stuff seriously now."
Yeah, good luck with that. I have kids myself and I have to agree with Mike Butcher over at TechCrunch...
PARENTS...MAY JUST POSSIBLY BE EXPECTED TO BE IN CHARGE OF THEIR KIDS.
In our house, we use K9 Web Protection from Blue Coat. It's web-based, it's easy, and it's free. But hey, Andy...good luck with that whole censoring-the-internet thing.
