Kim Peek, the Utah man who inspired the main character in the '80s movie "Rain Man", has died.  He was 58 years old.

His father, Fran Peek, says he suffered major heart attack on Saturday and was pronounced dead at a hospital in Murray, a suburb of Salt Lake City.

Peek was a true savant with an incredible memory.  The autistic man was the inspiration for writer Barry Morrow when he penned the script for "Rain Man", the 1988 film that nabbed four Academy Awards.

Fran said Morrow met his son in the early '80s at a convention.  The writer was instantly impressed by Peek's uncanny ability to remember everything he heard. Morrow went back and wrote the script and the film went on to win statues for best film and best actor for Dustin Hoffman, who portrayed Raymond Babbitt, the character inspired by Peek.

The funeral will be held next Tuesday in Taylorsville.
