A puppy escaped from its cage during transport yesterday and took off down on of the runways at LaGuardia Airport, causing quite a commotion as it dodged planes and a group of frantic pursuers.
Taxiing airplane came to a screeching halt, giving passengers a clear view of the spectacle unfolding before them, which included on worker getting down on his hands and knees in an unsuccessful attempt to convince the 14-month-old Rhodesian ridgeback, named Byrdie, to come to him.
Finally, the Port Authority cops tracked down the dog’s owner – Austin Varner – and got her off her flight so she could coax the dog off of the tarmac.
Varner, a 26-year-old Manhattan interior designer, said she was surprised at how far her dog had run.
“It took a while in the car to get to her,” she said.
When they reached Byrdie, the dog had been completely surrounded by workers.
“She was just standing there,” Varner said. “She didn’t want to come to them – but she came right to me, and we got her.”
The puppy on the runway caused about 20 minutes in delays at the airport.
