President Barack Obama has created a minor firestorm by revealing that he would not attend a traditional Memorial Day ceremony held each year at Arlington National Cemetery. Instead, the President will spend the day with his family in Chicago, Illinois.
In the past, presidents would attend the ceremony at Arlington and lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. A few conservative groups are outraged by the move.
“Obama will however make it back to Washington in time next week to honor Paul McCartney, who has sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy,” seethes conservative commenter Michelle Malkin.
Obama will also spend part of Memorial Day weekend visiting the Gulf Coast, surveying the damage from the recent oil spill there.
It should be noted, however, that the President will be attending a ceremony at Lincoln Cemetery, a military cemetery located near Chicago.
