Portuguese Water Dog? Obamas Reneg on Campaign Promise

The newest resident of 1600 Pennsylvania is a Portuguese water dog that the Obama girls have named Bo.

President and the first Lady have been literally inundated with questions about the Portuguese water dog ever since it was learned that the girls were promised a dog if the President emerged victorious in the election.

The Washington Post, who has been hot on the trail of this all-important story got the poop on the pup:

The little guy is a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog given to the Obama girls as a gift by that Portuguese water dog-lovin’ senator himself, Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts. The girls named it Bo — and let it be noted that you learned that here first. Malia and Sasha chose the name, because their cousins have a cat named Bo and because first lady Michelle Obama‘s father was nicknamed Diddley, a source said. (Get it? Bo . . . Diddley?)

Bo’s a handsome little guy. Well suited for formal occasions at the White House, he’s got tuxedo-black fur, with a white chest, white paws and a rakish white goatee.

This all well and good, but what about that little campaign promise that every seems to have forgotten about?

Michelle Obama told Entertainment Tonight recently that the family would adopt a rescue dog after the election was over.

PETA was certainly pleased by the announcement at the time:

So you can see why we’re quite proud of this whole thing and thank everyone who weighed in. We hope that the Obama family really listened to our message, and we hope that Barack, Michelle, and their daughters find a loving mutt who needs a good home.

But now what will PETA have to say? How will President Obama answer his critics? If his promise regarding a canine cannot be kept, what about those more important promises that were made?
