The identity of that porn actor who tested positive for HIV back in October, essentially shutting down the industry for a couple of months as the damage was assessed, has been revealed.
Derrick Burts, 24, recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times and says he now favors enforcing mandatory condom use in adult films.
Burts, who goes by Cameron Reid in straight films and by Derek Chambers in gay films, said he tested positive for HIV in October at the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation in Sherman Oaks. He had previously only been identified as “Patient Zeta”.
Burts says AIM staff informed him they had traced the source of his infection to another actor with whom he had done who was a “known positive.”
Burts inquired as to who the performer was but AIM staff said they couldn’t reveal who it was due to patient confidentiality.
Straight porn actors must provide proof of negative HIV test results before beginning filming, but the gay porn industry does not have that same restriction.
The clinic, though, issued a statement in November claiming that “Patient Zeta acquired the virus through private, personal activity.”
“That’s completely false,” Burts says. “There is no possible way. The only person I had sex with in my personal life was my girlfriend.”
Burts says he’s dissatisfied with the care he received from AIM. He says they were supposed to set him up with a doctor and help him get treatment, but they didn’t.
He now advocates mandated condom use in the adult film industry.
“AIM likes to state that testing is enough. That’s completely false,” he said. “It’s very dangerous. It should be required that you wear a condom on the set.
“Making $10,000 or $15,000 for porn isn’t worth your life,” he said. “Performers need to be educated.”
