F My Life: It's Funny, It's True, Except When It Happens to You
A woman broke through the barriers at St. Peter's Basilica in Italy and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he was coming down the main aisle to start Christmas Eve services on Thursday.
Benedict, 82, was able to get up quickly and was uninjured, according the Rev. Ciro Benedettini, a spokesperson for the Vatican. It seems that a woman in a red jumper jumping over the barriers and charging at the Pope before being flanked by bodyguards.
The incident occurred as the Pope's procession was progressing toward the main altar. The crowd gasped in shock as the procession came to an abrupt halt.
Benedettini stated that the woman appeared to be mentally unstable and had been arrested by police at the Vatican. He added that she also knocked down Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, who was taken to hospital for a check up.
