A U.S. Airways plane that was departing from New York City crashed in the Hudson River earlier today. It sounds as though the crash was caused by a bird flying into engine. Apparently all passengers were rescued from the Hudson. Now THAT must have been a bone-chilling experience, on multiple levels.
As has been the case with many recent events, the news first broke via Twitter and pictures of the plane floating in the river have been posted on Flickr, Tumblr, and TwitPic. There have even been pictures sent via iPhone.
There has been a ton of Twittering about the crash. There has also been a story on NowPublic, as well as a general resource page for finding more details.
Details are sketchy but it seems that the name of the pigeon sucked into the plane’s engine was Harold Meeker (sorry, bonus points for anyone who can find a pic of that “Far Side” cartoon)…





UPDATE: Here is a video of the crash as it was happening. A couple of minutes into it, you will see the plane hit the water as someone then realizes what is happening and zooms in on the US Airways craft in the water…
