A pizza delivery man in Chicago got the surprise of his life last Monday when an angry customer followed him back to his car and punched him in the eye.
Jonathan Kroning, who works for Pizza Hut, delivered a Meat Lover’s pizza to Shaver McNeil and his wife on Monday night.
Kroning, 20, says McNeil and his wife failed to give him a tip, so he refrained from saying “Have a good night.” He just took the $20.37 in exact change and headed back to his vehicle without saying a word, he says.
That’s when the pizza man says Mrs. McNeil leaned out of the front door and told Kroning he could have been more polite, adding that the pizza was cold. Kroning says he reminded her that pleasantness is related to the size of the tip (which was non-existent in this case).
When Mrs. McNeil said that she didn’t really care about tipping him, Kroning replied that he didn’t care about her either. Kroning then got into his car and prepared for the next delivery.
Suddenly, Shaver McNeil charged out to the car, complaining that their pizza was not hot demanding that Kroning take it back to Pizza Hut.
McNeil allegedly shoved the pizza into the car through an open window. McNeil’s wife alleges that Kroning knocked the pizza over.
Prosecutors say McNeil then took things to the next level.
“He sucker punches me in the face,” Kroning said. “By that point, I can’t see out of my left eye and blood’s gushing down my face.”
McNeil then demanded a refund so Kroning gave him the money and drove back to Pizza Hut. Once there, his manager phoned the police. Kroning wound up getting an orbital fracture under his eye.
Meanwhile, Mrs. McNeil wife had called the Pizza Hut to and demanded that Kroning be fired.
“I like Pizza Hut but I won’t order from them while he works there,” she says.
McNeil’s wife says that Kroning was crass and slammed their front door. She contends that Shaker McNeil is a good husband and didn’t deserve to be arrested.
“My husband is in jail for no reason and that is not right,” she said. “My husband did not rob anyone. Why would my husband rob a pizza guy who knows where he lives?”
Shaver McNeil, 23, has since been charged with felony robbery and felony aggravated battery, according to prosecutors. He’s still being held in the Kane County jail with bail is set at $10,000.
So the pizza was a little bit cold. You don’t charge out to the car and punch your delivery man in the face, especially after you stiffed him on the tip.
What do you think? Was Shaker McNeil justified in throwing a punch at Jonathan Kroning, or does he deserve to be locked up?
