Philip Markoff, A.K.A. the “Craiglist Killer”, is dead after committing suicide in a Boston jail, according to authorities.
The body of the former medical student was found in his cell Sunday morning in the Nashua Street Jail. He was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m. EDT.
Markoff, 24, had been accused of killing a masseuse he met via Craigslist.
According to an official statement, Markoff was “alone in his cell, and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life.”
The former Boston University student was caught in April of last year. He had pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of Julissa Brisman of New York and in the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman. Both crimes took place in Boston hotels in April of 2009. Rhode Island prosecutors had also accused Markoff of attacking a stripper that very same week.
He was due to stand trial on the Massachusetts cases this coming March.
Markoff was engaged to be married when arrested, in fact, his first wedding anniversary would have been Saturday but his fiancee, Megan McAllister, broke up with Markoff after going to see him in prison, despite initially defending him. She then cancelled their August 14, 2009 wedding.
