phantom alertHere is a fantastic business model that would be even better if it weren’t so dangerous.

PhantomAlert is a new service that warns you about the location of speed cameras.  Really, it’s less like a service and more like a social network.

You basically just register the locations of various speed cameras and then sign up for alerts. It’s a subscription-based model (it costs $9.99 per month) and it plugs right into your GPS system.

Your GPS will then beep at you when a traffic camera is nearby.

It’s really a great business model.  Users have to stay connected to the PhantomAlert service as it’s constantly evolving.

New speed cameras are added to the network very quickly (usually every hour!), and if old cameras move, you are informed.

PhantomAlert will also alert you of impending red light cameras, speed traps and DUI checkpoints.

Is this really a good thing, though, or does it mean that areas with fewer speed cameras and red light cameras will become urban death traps?

This much is certain.  PhantomAlert is here to stay.
