Cue up the R.E.M. ’cause “it’s the end of the world as we know it.” Yet another strong earthquake has struck, this time in Peru.
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck South America on Wednesday near Bolivia’s capital of La Paz. This quake, however, was not felt by many residents and mines in the area.
At first, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the Peru earthquake was a 6.3 magnitude but later corrected it. The temblor was centered about 100 miles (or 160 km) northwest of La Paz…and fairly deep…about 155.5 miles (250 km) below the earth’s surface.
An official at the closest large Peruvian mine, Xstrata’s Tintaya, said the Peru earthquake was not felt.
The temblor did not rattle La Paz nor did it shake Peru’s capital of Lima, according to people in those cities.
At this time, there are no reports of any damages or injuries.
