Remember Taylor Pugh?
Back in December, we told you about the pre-K student in Texas who was in danger of being kicked out of school due to his long hair.
On Monday night, the Mesquite school board ruled that 4-year-old Taylor Pugh can return to school without getting a haircut if he’ll wear it in braids that don’t touch his collar.
His parents immediately rejected that compromise and said that they would take the matter to the state education commissioner.
“We just spent 30 minutes telling them why we couldn’t do that,” Taylor’s father, Delton Pugh said of the braiding condition.
His mother, Elizabeth Taylor, says it takes much too long. Last time she tried braids, little Taylor cried because they hurt.
Superintendent Linda Henrie said if the boy attends class today with his hair in a ponytail, as his parents said he would, they would again send him to the library.
Taylor, who is in pre-kindergarten at Floyd Elementary School in Dallas, has been kept separate from his classmates since November and currently has lessons in the library with a school aide because his hair doesn’t meet the school’s dress code. It covers his ears and collar.
He was at Monday’s meeting with his hair in a ponytail.
What do you think? Is the school’s dress code too strict or should little Taylor be forced to get a haircut?
We’ll keep you posted.
