Google is helping Olly Hicks row around the world.
Last month, Olly set out in his boat, the Flying Carrot (hey, it’s his boat, he can name it whatever he wants) from Recherche Bay in Tasmania, Australia on the Virgin Global Row, in an attempt to become the first person to row around the entire globe – solo.
Google has supplied Olly with several products to help him get through the trip, including a water-resistant laptop and satellite uplink.
Olly will now have access to millions of books, videos, photographs, songs and websites. Hopefully, someone can airlift him a new Kindle 2. I think he’ll need it (did you pre-order your Kindle 2 yet?).
We will also be able to track Olly’s progress, read his blog posts, look at his pics and video clips and even ask him questions. We’ll be able to follow his journey on the newest version of Google Earth, where his trip is part of an expedition layer focused on the world’s oceans.
Good luck, Olly, we’ll be watching.
