Authorities report that a fireworks explosion on an island in North Carolina that is only reachable by ferry has killed one person and severely injured four others.
Hyde County spokeswoman Jamie Tunnell says that everyone injured on Saturday worked for the company that was preparing the annual Fourth of July fireworks display on Ocracoke Island.
Authorities say no danger remains, and ferries are running again.
Anchorage Marina dock master Robert Raborn reports that the Ocracoke explosion could be heard across the entire Ocracoke village.
Raborn was about 200 yards from the explosion when it occurred and says it seemed as though 40 minutes worth of fireworks went off in a matter of a few seconds.
Ocracoke Island is the southernmost inhabited island on the Outer Banks, about two hours from the mainland, and is only accessible by ferry.
