A 24-year-old Vermont man was shot and killed by a friend who used a gun in a prank that went horribly wrong.
Nicholas Bell, 23, attempted to play a prank on his sleeping friend by awakening him with the loud sound of an air rifle, according to police.
Instead, however, Bell accidentally used a real rifle.
Bell was charged with manslaughter following the Thursday incident, say Manchester police.
“The accused fired the weapon, which was a loaded .22 cal rifle hitting the [victim] in the chest,” said an official police statement. “The victim died at the scene.”
The victim was 24-year-old Jeffrey Charbonneau.
Bell has been placed in jail with bail set at $250,000.
