apple iphone

Gizmodo reportedly paid an unidentified source a sum of money to obtain possession of a new Apple iPhone that was accidentally left behind in a California bar.

Sources are trying to confirm whether or not Gizmodo got its hands on the real things, but the site has a very official-looking letter from Apple asking for its property back.

This whole thing just sounds a little too convenient to me.  An Apple tech just happens to leave behind the most sacred technology in Apple’s arsenal, and then it just happens to wind up in the hands of Gizmodo?

Gizmodo did manage to contact Gray Powell, the Apple engineer in question, lending at least a bit of credibility to this story:

Gray Powell: Hello?

John Herrman: Is this Gray?

G: Yeah.

J: Hi, this is John Herrman from Gizmodo.com.

G: Hey!

J: You work at Apple, right?

G: Um, I mean I can’t really talk too much right now.

J: I understand. We have a device, and we think that maybe you misplaced it at a bar, and we would like to give it back.

G: Yeah, I forwarded your email [asking him if it was his iPhone], someone should be contacting you.

J: OK.

G: Can I send this phone number along?

J: [Contact information]

I suppose it is possible that this iPhone was the real thing. Guess we’ll find out in a few months.
