“The Flying Tomato” has struck again!
Shaun White put on quite a show on Wednesday night in the men’s halfpipe with his new trick – a spiraling Double McTwist 1260. White had already won the gold medal and was simply taking a victory lap, one that will go down as possibly the greatest victory lap of all time.
“I wanted a victory lap that would be remembered,” White said. “I achieved that.”
White scored a 48.4 on his second run, even though he had already won his second gold medal in the event with a score of 46.8 on his first run. He pondered his options for a moment with his coaching staff, then went for it.
On the final stunt of his second halfpipe run, Shaun White nailed the last half of the 3 1/2 twists he does alongside two head-over-heels flips.
Instead of calling the trick the “Double McTwist 1260,” White wants it to be known as the “Tomahawk,” after a huge steak he ate at the Winter X Games in Aspen, where he escaped from a massive wipeout without serious injury.
“The Flying Tomato” will get the gold medal in Vancouver on Thursday.
