Tomorrow, June 4, is National Doughnut Day 2010. Mmm free doughnuts!
The Salvation Army came up with the holiday in 1917 to boost the morale of troops fighting in WWI. It is always celebrated on the first Friday in June.
Back in the day, these doughnuts were fried in oil using an American soldier’s metal helmet.
Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme outlets both are marking the holiday by giving away free doughnuts.
To get your freebie at Dunkin’ Donuts, you’ll need to buy a drink. At Krispy Kreme, there are no strings attached.
In fact, the folks at Krispy Kreme were kind enough to contact us with the following details:
Krispy Kreme is offering customers one free doughnut of any variety at participating U.S. store locations. No purchase is necessary to receive a free doughnut.
Krispy Kreme also wants to keep the day social, so they are encouraging everyone to join the chatter about National Doughnut Day. Customers are encouraged to log on to Twitter to Tweet their desired doughnut variety with the hashtag #KrispyKreme, or take a picture at Krispy Kreme with their favorite doughnut and post it to Krispy Kreme’s Facebook fan page.
The offer is good for one doughnut of any variety per customer. If people want to find a participating store near them, all they have to do is go to www.krispykreme.com.
So, go on! Enjoy your free doughnut!
