How’s this for a gold medal couple? Evan Lysacek and Nastia Liukin have both won gold medals in each of their respective sports, and they’re also dating.
Lysacek became the first man from Team USA in 22 years to win a figure skating gold medal last week, while Liukin is a gymnastics champ.
The two first met back in October 2008 in Rapid City, S.D., working together on NBC’s Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular. They have been dating since last summer.
“We became good friends and became really close since,” says Lysacek.
He travelled to Dallas to cheer on Liukin during her gymnastics comeback at the U.S. Nationals back in August. This month, it was Nastia’s turn to support her boyfriend.
“To see his dreams come true was amazing,” says Liukin, 20, about seeing Lysacek take the gold.
“Even though we’re not in the same sport, there’s nothing like the Olympics. It was nice to be on other side, to be the support system. But I was nervous.”
“She been so helpful to me,” adds Lysacek. “She has been through it herself. If I’m having a bad day, she tells me to have faith and to keep going.
“Sometimes your support system has more faith in you than yourself, and when she tells me things are going to be fine, I really believe it.”
