NBC NewsThe partnership is over.  NBC News has acquired full rights to msnbc.com from Microsoft and is rebranding the site as NBCNews.com.

Details of the arrangement are not yet clear and the financial terms haven’t been disclosed.

NBC News President Steve Capus said the site would become part of NBC News Digital, a new division led by Vivian Schiller, the former president and CEO of National Public Radio.

“Some really talented journalists have passed through the doorway of msnbc.com and taken us to the point where we have something that is an outstanding set of properties, and we value them to such a degree that we decided that we wanted to own them outright,” she said.

For now, MSNBC.com will redirect to NBCNews.com. Eventually, it will become the address of MSNBC TV.

Last night’s move ends a 16-year joint venture between Microsoft and NBCUniversal, now owned by Comcast. The arrangement merged NBC News content with Microsoft’s technological acumen.

The ties are deep, and separating them will likely take at least two years, the network said.

What do you think?  Was the time right for the two companies to end the partnership?
