The job losses continue to mount as the economy trudges on.
Yesterday, layoffs were announced by IBM, Google, Amazon and The New York Times. IBM has the highest tally with 5,000 people losing their jobs. Amazon cut 210 employees at distribution centers in Nevada, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.
Google is also letting about 200 people go from sales and marketing go. The New York Times also announced a 5 percent reduction of its staff as well.
In Google's case, Senior VP of Global Sales and Business Development Omid Kordestani says overlapping positions largely led to the layoffs.
“When companies grow that quickly it’s almost impossible to get everything right — and we certainly didn’t,” he says.
Employees are being encouraged to look for other opportunities within Google itself, Kordestani says.
Google previously laid off about 100 workers this past January.
