Some moms in Florida decided to prove that it’s OK to breastfeed in public by holding a “Nurse-In” at a local Chick-Fil-A restaurant.
The “Nurse-In” was organized by one mom who felt that she was discriminated against. It seems she was breastfeeding her child when an employee at the restaurant asked her to cover herself and handed her a towel.
“Her right to do that was violated and I’m here to show my support, and we’re breastfeeding. We’d like to see more people breastfeeding in public. It should be normal,” fellow mom Alejandra Sarmiento stated.
The mother tried to speak to the manager, the general manager and even the restaurant’s corporate offices but got no satisfaction…so she organized a gaggle of moms to go to Chick-Fil-A breastfeed on Friday.
The law in Florida does permit women to breastfeed wherever is needed.
The law clearly states: “A mother may breastfeed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother’s breast is covered during or incidental to the breastfeeding.”
The restaurant has said that it is working diligently to better educate its staff members about public breastfeeding. The parent company is also considering door stickers to inform guests it is a “mother-friendly” location.
