A 14-year-old, 555 pound boy named Alexander Draper is now in foster care. His 49-year-old mother, Jerri Gray, was arrested at the end of June on charges of criminal neglect regarding her son’s obesity.
Before skipping town with her son, Gray was contacted by the Department of Social Services several with regard to her son’s weight issue and was even given a treatment plan to turn around Alexander Draper’s obesity, according to Gray’s attorney, Grant Varner.
Varner had this implausible explanation for Alexander Draper’s weight gain:
“There’s a strong likelihood that this kid is going to school and could eat whatever he wanted to at school, because you’ve got friends who will help him buy food or will give him their leftovers.”
Alexander has been placed in foster care and Gray will have to go to court to face two felony charges: custodial interference, which carries a 5-year sentence, and child neglect, which carries a 10-year sentence.
