As we reported earlier, Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete won the Miss Universe 2010 beauty pageant last night in Las Vegas.
The heavy favorite to win going into the contest, however, was Miss Philippines, Venus Raj, who only wound up coming in fourth place overall.
So what happened? Many suspect it was Raj’s response during the question and answer segment of the show that was her undoing.
When Miss Mexico was asked a question about the role of the internet among today’s youth, she gave a very thoughtful and insightful answer. On the other hand, when William Baldwin asked Miss Philippines if she had made any major mistakes in her life that she wished she could undo, her answer was not quite as insightful.
“Thank you so much, Sir, for that wonderful question. Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Good evening Las Vegas! You know what, Sir? In my 22 years of existence, I can say there is nothing major, major…I mean problem, that I have done in my life because I am very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So thank you so much that I am here!”
In essence, Raj dodged the question and gave a big shout-out to her family. It’s certainly not the worst answer we’ve ever heard (see here for that), but it’s probably not what the judges were looking for.
