Whoops!
The Defense Department has just blocked access to its own military-friendly video-sharing site TroopTube, which is the military's own "safe" version of YouTube.
Troops in both the United States and abroad have been prevented from viewing TroopTube videos with a message that states: "this site is not currently approved for viewing due to content and/or security issues associated with potentially malicious file extensions”.
Military websurfers are also warned that “Using the Internet for other than authorized purposes may result in adverse administrative of disciplinary action.”
Launched toward the end of last year, TroopTube lets users register as members of one of the main branches of the armed forces, family, civilian Defense Department employees or supporters.
Members are then allowed to upload video clips from anywhere that has an internet hook-up. The videos are usually reviewed “for taste, copyright violations, and national security issues” before going live.
