Windows Vista

Microsoft has officially finished Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 R2.

It is not yet known when SP2 will be made available for public download. Originally, it was thought that it would be ready by the end of this month, and that could still be the case if Microsoft posts the code to one of its download sites by tomorrow.

Others believe it may not be ready until May.

Microsoft will being pushing Vista SP2 bits to users through Automatic Updates over the next several months.

Microsoft has also started pushing Vista SP1 to users who previously had blocked it.  The company advises users who are in the middle of deploying Vista SP1 to finish with those deployments as planned, instead of jumping right to SP2.

Vista SP2 contains many security and performance updates, plus several new features, including:

  • Windows Search 4.0
  • Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack
  • Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista
  • Windows Connect Now (WCN), which is designed to “simplify Wi-Fi Configuration”
  • The addition of support for UTC timestamps in the exFAT file system
