earthquake

A hefty 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico’s Pacific Coast early on Thursday, killing on person and rattling buildings as far away as Mexico City.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the strong earthquake struck near the town of Pinotepa Nacional, which is located about 80 miles to the southwest of the city of Oaxaca.  So far, there are no reports of any major structural damage.

Near the epicenter of the Mexico earthquake, a falling beam killed a man, 46, while he was asleep in his home.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any warnings in the wake of the temblor and no major hotels are reporting any damage.

Residents in Mexico City, which is nearly 300 miles to the north, were awakened by the earthquake and power was lost in some areas.  Some curious residents wandered out onto the street in pajamas, but there were no casualties in the city.
