mel gibsonMel Gibson had his criminal record wiped clean on Tuesday when a judge in California expunged his drunken driving conviction from a 2006 arrest.  That arrest led to accusations of anti-Semitism because of the actor’s remarks to a policeman.

Gibson had been ordered to attend A.A. meetings and do public service work as part of his conviction for driving under the influence, all of which he did do.

“He does not appear to be on any sort of probation or facing any similar charges,” said Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lawrence Mira. “The request is granted.”

Mel Gibson was arrested in 2006 and generated a firestorm of interest after his leaked police report indicated that he made some anti-Semitic statements to the arresting officer, who is Jewish.

“Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” Gibson said at the time.

Gibson issued a public apology for the comments after they were made public.  The Anti-Defamation League, which combats discrimination against Jews, responded that the apology didn’t quite cut it.  Some of his peers in Hollywood weren’t happy with the actor either.

The whole affair was ill-timed, as some Jewish groups were also concerned that his 2004 movie “The Passion of the Christ” contained potentially harmful depictions of Jews.

Gibson was able to have his criminal convictions erased record because he willingly completed all required probation and kept a clean driving record.
