It was a case of "good news, bad news" from the WWDC conference today. First, we learned that there will be a new Apple iPhone 3GS, the "S" is for Speed.

Most iPhone apps should run at least 2 times faster. Specifics weren’t given about the processor speed or the RAM in the unit, but it's probably about double the RAM and a supercharged processor.

One of the biggest advancements with the new iPhone 3GS is the expected battery life. Apple now says that the iPhone 3GS will get 9 hours of WiFi usage time instead of 6 on the current model. Talk time will be about the same, however.

The iPhone 3GS comes in two sizes and two colors, black or white. The 16 GB version will cost $199 and the 32 GB version will cost $299.

The iPhone 3GS will hit the shelves in the U.S. on June 19 and will be released to the rest of the world on July 7.

Meanwhile, we will also see the debut of the $99 iPhone starting today.

Now for the bad news. If you want to be able to use tethering and MMS on your new iPhone, don't hold your breath.

Apple has simply said that MMS will be available "later this summer" and tethering will be available "later."

Gee, thanks AT&T. It's clear that they don't have the bandwidth to support these features currently, but how long will we have to put up with this? Maybe we'd all be better off with two tin cans and a piece of string.
