Mattie Stepanek was a world-renowned author whose goal in life was to preach a message of global peace.

He died in 2004 just before his fourteenth birthday.

Mattie Stepanek suffered from a rare form of muscular dystrophy now known as Dysautonomic Mitcochondrial Myopathy.

Prior to his death, he inspired those around him, including everyone from Oprah Winfrey to former president Jimmy Carter.

Now, five years after his death, his mother, Jeni Stepanek, pays tribute to his life in a new book called Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs.

Jeni Stepanek appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday morning to discuss her new book abut Mattie.

In the book, Jeni tells of how she lost Mattie to the disease along with three other children.  Jeni Stepanek herself has the same neuromuscular disease.
