A gruesome discovery in Massachusetts as police say the body of a woman who died in a public swimming pool went unnoticed for days while swimmers continued to use the pool.
On Tuesday night, teenagers discovered the body of Marie Joseph, 36, in the Vietnam Veterans Swimming Pool in Fall River, Mass.
Joseph had gone swimming on Sunday with one of her 9-year-old neighbors and his family. She collided with the boy while the two went down a pool water slide.
After the collision, the boy surfaced but the woman did not, he said.
Amazingly, no one knows whether the boy and his family looked for Joseph when they left the pool.
A health inspector who examined the pool on Tuesday described the water as “cloudy,” according to Fall River mayor William Flanagan.
Experts say a dead body can decompose for several days before it begins to float.
The lifeguards and manager of the public pool, along with the three health inspectors involved, have been placed on administrative leave.
