AOL-owned MapQuest has just unveiled its new iPhone app. There has been one available for Blackberry users for a while now, but iPhone users can now get in on the fun as well.

One of the best features of the MapQuest iPhone app is a "carousel" that is displayed at the bottom of a map.  It shows you icons for things like gas stations, hotels, coffee shops, etc.  Just click on an icon and find one that's near your current location.

On the down side, the app needs lots of work as far as the "search" function goes.  The app often will return a "No Search Results Found" message for many specific locations.

You also must "log in" if you want to access certain "My Places" features.  Personally, I hate having to "sign in" to things on an iPhone...it's a huge hassle.

Still, the MapQuest iPhone app is perfect for locating nearby coffee, hotels, traffic conditions, etc. Let's hope that the next version lets you do more without needing a Mapquest account.
