Fail Nation: A Visual Romp Through the World of Epic Fails.

In honor of Memorial Day 2009, Google Earth has released a new project for those who may be unable to make the trip to Arlington National Cemetary.

A new Google Earth layer, called Map the Fallen, will allow you to display where, when, and how each military service member has died since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan.  A line connects each service member's approximate location of death to his or her hometown.

The tool will give you a detailed profile of each person.

Google engineer Sean Askay created the tool in his free time.  He has this to say about Map the Fallen on his blog...

"I have created a map for Google Earth that will connect you with each of their stories -- you can see photos, learn about how they died, visit memorial Web sites with comments from friends and families, and explore the places they called home and where they died."

The layer works uses a timeline to display troop death chronologically, going all the way back to the initial one back in Afghanistan on October 10, 2001.  The user can search for a fallen service member by name, age, gender, hometown, or location of death.
