The one and only “Macho Man” Randy Savage, a pro wrestling icon in the 1980s, died today in a car accident in Florida.
Randy’s brother and former pro wrestler, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo, says Savage, 58, suffered a heart attack while he was driving at around 9:25 a.m. EDT and lost control of his vehicle.
He was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across the center median, through oncoming traffic, and hit a tree. He was then taken to Largo Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Savage’s wife Lynn was a passenger in the vehicle but survived with minor injuries. She was transported to a different local hospital and treated.
Police say that alcohol was not a factor in the crash and an investigation is currently under way.
Macho Man began wrestling in what was then the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase “Oh Yeaahhhhh!”
He went on to form one half of the “Mega Powers” tag team with Hulk Hogan before turning on him and “going heel” prior to WrestleMania V.
Randy and Lynn has recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary.
UPDATE: Hulk Hogan has posted to Twitter, saying that’s he “devastated” by the death of Savage.
“I’m completely devastated, after over 10 years of not talking with Randy, we’ve finally started to talk and communicate. HH”
The tweets are coming in from all over the pro wrestling world now. See below for more…
