Lily the Bear has become a viral hit after being the first and only bear to have a live webcam installed in its cave during hibernation.
The pregnant bear, 3, had the “den cam” installed earlier this month so researchers could monitor her in hibernation.
On January 22, 2010, Lily gave birth gave birth to a cub and it was captured on video.
Dr. Lynn Rogers, known as the “Bearwalker of the Northwoods”, has known Lily since she was born in January 2007, and leads the den cam project for the North American Bear Center.
He says:
”People are falling in love with this bear around the world, and this is one of the best opportunities we’ve had to educate people about what black bears are really like.
“The public has a very negative feel about bears, but a bear like Lily can help turn that around.
“They are feared, but the perception of them being fearful creatures is built by media and myth.
“For each person in North America killed by a black bear there’s 13 killed by snakes, 120 by bees, 45 by dogs, 250 by lightning, and 60,000 homicides.
“Every bear has their own personality and Lily is one of the more trusting, calm bears that we can walk with.”
The footage from the Lily the Bear Cam will be used in a wildlife special featuring Dr. Rogers, which has the working title Bearwalkers.
