The Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) was tasked with uncovering the truth, with millions watching as it happened.

LCROSS was launched on June 18th and did a lunar fly-by five days later prior to entering into orbit.

On Friday October 9th, LCROSS made its final approach and crashed into the moon. The heavy impact should have created a great plume of debris, although at this point, the results were less-than-spectacular.
