larry gelbartComedic writer and playwright Larry Gelbart died on Friday morning in Beverly Hills at his home. He was 81 years of age and was diagnosed with cancer in June.

Gelbart was the man who created M*A*S*H, which aired on the CBS network from 1972 to 1983. In addition to creating the hit TV series, he also wrote and produced many of the show’s early episodes.

Gelbart started his career in the radio industry in the 1940s prior to making the switch to TV in the 1950s. He worked with comedy giants such as Sid Ceasar and Mel Brooks.

After M*A*S*H, Gelbart worked on the silver screen. He was one of the co-writers for “Tootsie” and he also did some work on Broadway, co-writing “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”
