A Sri Lankan maid who complained of a heavy workload had 24 nails hammered into her hands, legs, and forehead by a Saudi couple.
Many of the nearly 2 million Sri Lankans who sought employment oversees last year have complained of abuse in the Middle East.
L.T. Ariyawathi, 49, came back home on Friday after spending five months in Saudi Arabia.
Her family realized what had happened to the mother of three when she started complaining of pain and they took to a physician.
Ariyawathi was immediately taken to a hospital for removal of the nails, which were hammered into her while they were hot.
The Foreign Employment Bureau is discussing the matter with the Attorney-General while the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry plans to investigate the incident in conjunction with the Saudi government.
