F My Life: It's Funny, It's True, Except When It Happens to You
If you're over the age of 45, you probably remember that photo. If you're under 45, you've probably seen it.
The iconic 1972 picture of the then 9-year-old Vietnamese girl named Kim Phuc Phan Thai running through the street naked suffering from napalm burns became etched into our collective memories forever.
She is now 46 years old and resides in Canada. Kim Phuc Phan Thai, A.K.A. "Napalm Girl", talked about her harrowing ordeal recently with the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors. She wanted to present a message of hope for burn victims everywhere.
"Sixty-five percent of my body got burned," she tells HealthDay in an interview published today.
Phuc says her face was untouched by the napalm, but the third degree burns sheared the skin from her back and left arm, leaving permanent scars and recurring pain.
Phuc says she spent 14 months in a burn unit and underwent 17 operations."I should be dead," Phuc tells HealthDay.
"But I was spared," she says. "So now I think, 'I cannot change something that happened to me already. But I can change the meaning.'"
Nick Ut, an Associated Press photographer, won a Pulitzer prize for the photograph.
