Got lots of oily sludge in your ocean? Are tar balls washing up on your shoreline? Maybe Kevin Costner can help!
It seems that, while working on the movie “Waterworld”, the actor came up with the idea for an oil extraction machine that separates oil from water.
The device operates on the principal of centrifugal force. Oil and water enter the machine together and are then expelled separately, according to MSNBC.com. The device can ensure a 97 percent cleanup of the water used in it, say officials at Ocean Therapy Solutions, according to a report from New Orleans TV station WDSU.
“We moved this through a technology that we know works, and it’s prepared to go out and solve problems, not talk about them,” Costner said.
“We’re working on the technology now that will get us the other 3 percent so that you can actually drink out of the machine,” OTS official John Houghtaling II said.
So how about that? “Waterworld” wasn’t a complete flop after all!
