In dramatic fashion, I’ll Have Another closed the gap and passed Bodemeister in the stretch to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs this evening.
With first-time Derby jockey Mario Gutierrez at the helm, I’ll Have Another closed strong for trainer Doug O’Neill to win the 138th running of the iconic race in 2 minutes, 1.83 seconds in front of a record crowd of more than 165,000.
I’ll Have Another wound up winning by 1 & 1/2 lengths.
“He gives 100 percent every time, as soon as you ask him,” Gutierrez, 25, said after the race. Gutierrez became the 42nd first-time Kentucky Derby jockey to win the race.
I’ll Have Another became the first horse to ever win the Kentucky Derby from post No. 19.
The Preakness Stakes, the second jewel in the Triple Crown, will be held on May 20 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
I’ll Have Another will be there.
“We’re going to the Preakness, baby!” O’Neill said.
