A woman in Oak Park, Michigan is being threatened with jail time just for wanting to grow vegetables in her own front yard.
“The price of organic food is kind of through the roof,” says Julie Bass, who decided to grow her own veggies after the city tore up her grass to replace a sewer line. Oak Park officials now think that Julie’s new garden is “unseemly,” and have ordered her to remove it or face a misdemeanor charge.
According to Oak Park City Planner Kevin Rulkowski, the city’s code says “a front yard has to have suitable, live, plant material.”
Bass says, “It’s definitely live. It’s definitely plant. It’s definitely material. We think it’s suitable.”
Rulkowski, though, argues that “suitable” means “common.”
“So,” he says, “if you look around and you look in any other community, what’s common to a front yard is a nice, grass yard with beautiful trees and bushes and flowers.”
That’s right. Forget about rapists and pedophiles, good citizens. We’ve got gardeners that need to be locked up and stopped…before it’s too late!
