Julian Assange has requested political asylum in Ecuador.
Ecuador’s government says the WikiLeaks founder is at their embassy in London and wishes to be granted asylum.
Officials in the South American nation are considering the request, its foreign minister said on this afternoon.
“Ecuador is studying and analyzing the request,” Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino told reporters in Quito.
Julian Assange faces extradition to Sweden for questioning in an alleged sex crimes case after Britain’s high court ruled last week that it had rejected a legal request to reconsider his case.
Assange’s legal battle to remain in Britain has been ongoing for upwards of two years now, hampering WikiLeaks’ effort to expose more secrets.
