Judge Sonia Sotomayor, a Hispanic federal judge who grew up in the Bronx and was raised by a single mother, was nominated by President Barack Obama Tuesday morning for the Supreme Court. She will fill the seat being vacated by Justice David Souter.
The President was seeking someone with empathy and a “real life” storyline. He probably got both with his historic pick of Sotomayor.
If she is confirmed, Sonia Sotomayor will be just the 3rd female Supreme Court justice in the history of the United States. She would also be the first Hispanic.
Her parents traveled to New York from Puerto Rico and, as a child, she lived in public housing.
Sotomayor was nominated to the second circuit court of appeals by former President Bill Clinton back in 1998. She was then brought to the federal courts in 1991 by former President George H.W. Bush.
Sotomayor, born June 25, 1954, graduated from Princeton in 1976 and obtained a law degree from Yale in 1979. Her father died when she was a child.
