joel branstrom

It was supposed to be a prank.

The students at Olathe High School in Kansas were trying to recreate this classic CollegeHumor prank by having popular girls’ basketball coach Joel Branstrom attempt to make a blindfolded, half-court basketball shot.

They told everyone in the auditorium to cheer wildly once he released the ball, making him think that he had sunk the miracle shot and won the “grand prize”, four tickets to the Final Four.

There was just one problem.  Branstrom actually did make the blindfolded shot.

Instead of getting tickets to the Final Four, he got a gift certificate to a Mexican restaurant from students who felt bad about pulling the prank on the coach.

Luckily, Branstrom took the joke well. He said he suspected something from the start, thinking that he might get hit with a pie. He says he thought the crowd would cheer regardless of what happened with his shot.

Since this story has received national attention, several people have come forward offering Final Four tickets to the coach. No word on whether or not he’s actually going to accept them.
