Joaquin Phoenix Letterman

Over a year and a half later, the truth has finally come out.  That crazed, rambling Joaquin Phoenix appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman back in February 2009 was a hoax.

The interview was all part of Phoenix’s elaborate performance art for the documentary “I’m Still Here”, according to director Casey Affleck, who is married to Summer Phoenix, Joaquin’s sister.

Phoenix has been putting everyone on the whole time, from saying he was quitting Hollywood to concentrate on his rap career to the actual rap career itself, it was all part of the act.

“I’m Still Here” was released last week by Magnolia Pictures to horrible reviews from several critics, including Roger Ebert, who wrote that the film was “a sad and painful documentary that serves little useful purpose other than to pound another nail into the coffin.”

During last year’s somewhat uncomfortable interview with David Letterman, the talk show host repeatedly tried to engage Phoenix, only to be met with and simple, one-word answers, as Phoenix appeared to be in a stupor.

At the end of the bizarre interview, Letterman joked, “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”
