22-year-old Jimena Navarrete of Guadalajara, Mexico has won the title of Miss Universe 2010.
“I want to whole world to know about my country and my people,” Navarrete proclaims, after defeating 82 other competitors from around the globe.
With her victory, Navarette takes over the reign from last year’s winner, Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela.
During the interview portion of the competition, Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek asked Navarette how she felt about unsupervised internet use.
“I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time,” she said, with the help of an interpreter. “We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”
This is likely the answer that helped her grab the Miss Universe crown over the heavily-favored Miss Philippines, Venus Raj, who didn’t fare quite as well during the question & answer segment.
Miss USA Rima Fakih stunned many when she was eliminated at the very beginning of the competition. Fakih made headlines when she became the first Muslim to capture the Miss USA crown.
