A disappointing season has consequences it seems, as the Indianapolis Colts have fired head coach Jim Caldwell.
New general manager Ryan Grigson, who was hired last Wednesday, announced the move today. Grigson decided to make the coaching change in the aftermath of a horrendous 2-14 season that will give the Colts the first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.
“Change sometimes isn’t always the easiest transition to make but it’s part of this game, part of this league and part of the steps needed for us to get going in this new era of Colts football,” Grigson said.
Caldwell took the reins from Tony Dungy in 2009 and led Indy to a 14-2 record with a Super Bowl loss to the New Orleans Saints. In 2010, the Colts were 10-6 with a first-round playoff defeat at the hands of the New York Jets before the neck injury to Peyton Manning led to a disaster this season.
The Colts lost their first 13 games without Manning before winning two games in a row. A loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the season-finale guaranteed them the top overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
“This was a difficult decision,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said. “I think that it was based on the feeling that this was the direction the franchise needed to go. I wanted to make sure we took all the time we needed to make sure it was the right decision.”
