Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was abducted in 1991 when she was just 11 years old, has been found alive and well in California, according to the El Dorado County sheriff’s office.
Dugard is in good health but the office offered no details.
A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that a man and woman have been taken into custody in connection with the case.
An FBI agent phoned Terry Brugard on Wednesday afternoon to tell her that Jaycee Lee Dugard had been found.
She had last been seen heading to her bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 10, 1991.
A vehicle occupied by two people pulled up to Jaycee Dugard and abducted her in plain view of her stepfather.
No sign of her or her kidnappers was ever found, authorities reported.
Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, stated that this turn of events is “absolutely huge.”
“One of the things that we preach to searching families all the time … is that even in these long-term cases there’s hope,” he said on Thursday.
“Even in these long-term cases … it’s important that we not let the world forget.”
